Essential oils are highly concentrated volatile aromatic compounds found in plants. They come from the stems, leaves, flowers, bark, rind… Quite simply, its what you smell as you peel an orange or rub an herb in your hands. After a distillation process, these highly concentrated extracts can be used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications. Their unique chemistry and therapeutic properties enable them to go to work in our bodies as a restorative agent for our well-being. They can be used as single essential oils or in complex essential oil blends depending on user experience and desired benefit.
dōTERRA essential oils can be used safely in many ways.
3 main categories include Aromatic, Topical & Internal.
Aromatic – Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system is part of the brain that supports a variety of functions including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory. For this reason, essential oils have an especially powerful effect via aromatic application.
A simple way for the whole family to benefit from aromatic use is through diffusion. A diffuser allows the oil to be dispersed through the air as we breathe in to receive their therapeutic properties. While we love our diffusers (in every room of our house), you don’t need one to experience oils aromatically. Take a drop of oil right in your hands and rub them together. Cup your hands over your nose & inhale deeply to achieve the same health benefits.
Topical – Oils can be applied directly to the skin for more localized benefit. Whether you are targeting a specific location for intended results, or simply applying them to the back of your neck or bottoms of the feet for general support, oils are easily absorbed into the skin and are very effective. It is always important to use caution when using oils topically in case of sensitivity. They can be diluted accordingly with a carrier oil, such as coconut or almond oil. See the Safety page for more information on dilution & oil safety.
Internal – Through cooking, adding to your water, or in a capsule, essential oils can provide great health benefits when consumed internally. It is important that you know that I’m strictly talking about dōTERRA essential oils when I recommend internal use. Not all oils are created equally, and this is the only brand I trust to ingest. Pay attention to your oil labels for instruction on internal usage.
When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs and are then excreted.
