A certain bug hit our home a couple weeks ago. My husband is a school teacher and has had several students out sick, so when he called and said he was leaving work with a headache and chills… I knew we were all about to quarantine. He tested positive for a common virus and came home to rest & recover. I followed with all the same symptoms about three days behind him, but our actual sick days surprised me. We were feeling back to normal in just a few days and our kids never caught it. I want to share parts of our routine that I think contributed to such a quick recovery.
But first, let me start with a disclaimer. I am not a doctor. I am a friend sharing a personal experience of sickness & recovery in our own family. This post is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.
- Headache – for us, this was the worst part!
- Body aches (specifically knees & low back)
- Chills & low fever (99.5-102) – this only lasted about 24 hours
- Loss of appetite / nausea
- Loss of smell
- Change in taste
It is very hard to get all the quality nutrients that your body needs from diet alone, so supplementation is important, especially during a time when the immune system needs extra support. Below are the supplements we take every single day. I’m including clickable links to dōTERRA & Amazon for everything I mention.
- dōTERRA’s Lifelong Vitality Pack – full dose
- OnGuard+ Softgels – 2x/day
- Pure Encapsulations Zinc – 30mg/day
- Mary Ruth’s Liposomal Vitamin C – 1/2 TBSP/day
- Probiotics (our whole family uses this one)
- Mito2Max – 1x/day
- TerraZyme (digestive enzyme) – 1-2 with every meal
- If you have MTHFR like me, Thorne’s Methylation bundle is a must! Message me for a $25 off code.
Essential oils work with the body on a cellular level, and in fact, they can penetrate the cell wall of a virus to stop/slow the duplication process. We can use oils in a variety of ways to help feel better faster and offer true support to the immune system. If you’re wondering why I only use dōTERRA, its because of quality & efficacy. Read more about the difference here. Below are specific ways we used oils during sickness.
Topical Blend #1: Eucalyptus, Lavender, Frankincense, Lemon, Geranium
Topical Blend #2: Breathe, Lime, Frankincense & Copaiba
For topical blends, you can combine 5-8 drops of each in a roller bottle and top with a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil, and roll on the spine, chest & feet several times per day. You could also apply 3-4 drops of each directly to the spine with a carrier oil and massage in one at a time.
Peppermint – for comfort during raised body temperature, head or body tension, digestive upset and opening the airways.
2-3 drops Lemon (or any citrus oil) in drinking water
Deep Blue oil or rub – for sore muscles & body aches
DDR Prime – for cellular support, take 2-4 drops internally each day
Frankincense – 2 drops under the tongue each morning
I created a giant cart with everything we use regularly to help you get started. You can add, subtract or change anything you want : dōTERRA Cart Another starter kit option that I love is the Healthy Habits Kit.
For loss of smell / olfactory training – Eucalyptus, Rose, Clove & Lemon. Simply inhale each oil from the bottle, one nostril at a time, twice a day. A saline rinse or spray inside the nose is also helpful.
Drastically reduce your sugar intake and increase fresh citrus fruits, green vegetables & lean protein. Natural sources of Vitamin C, A & Zinc were our focus for snacks and meals. For us, we lost our appetite quite a bit, but eating enough to take our supplements was a priority. Getting whole-food nutrients (from food & supplements) is so important for healthy immune response.
Sugar suppresses the immune system, which means people with a higher sugar intake will have a harder time fighting off sickness. Watch what you drink, as well! I encourage you to up your water as much as you can… ideally half your body weight in ounces each day.
Rest & Sunshine
Genuinely rest. Try to give the body a break from day-to-day stress and take it easy. While it could be easy to stay in bed until you feel better, getting up to move is also important. Patrick & I would get up and take 15 minute walks outside or sit on the porch in the sunshine when energy was low.
Another good way to relax & support the body – take a bath! Fill the tub with warm/hot water, add a cup of unscented epsom salts + any of the oils from the topical blends above. Soak, detox & soothe.
Don’t Live in Fear
It seems like everything we see regarding this bug promotes fear or division, but it honestly doesn’t need to be that way at all. I’m not saying there aren’t scary cases of this or that you shouldn’t be careful, but when it came down to it for our family, lifestyle & simple shifts made all the difference. Patrick & I were both feeling back to normal within three days and our four children never got sick. Take that for what you will, but I’m super thankful for tools like this.
