We use dōTERRA oils for our whole family, dogs included. Ingredients matter a lot to us, so when something as simple as giving the dog a bath is the task at hand, of course we turn to natural solutions with therapeutic benefits.
Not all essential oils are created equally, so not just any brand will do for our pets. dōTERRA is committed to bringing the highest quality essential oils possible into our homes, so it is the only brand essential oil we use. Animals are also more sensitive to essential oils than humans, so using caution is always a good idea.
Our dog shampoo recipe is simple, using ingredients that you’ll be able to use for many other DIY’s and remedies. We choose Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented Castile Soap over the scented versions, because we want the gentlest option.
The oils we add in serve specific purpose for our dogs. Lavender is naturally calming to the mind and body, so it is perfect for dogs who might find bath-time stressful or who have any skin irritation.
TerraShield is dōTERRA’s repellent blend that keeps away biting insects like fleas & ticks. We love to add it to a spray bottle with water to spray on the dogs throughout the month, as needed.
Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO) is liquid coconut oil that has had the fat removed so that it stays in liquid form. It is moisturizing without being greasy and very gentle to the skin.
Here is the recipe for our DIY Dog Shampoo:
3/4 C (about 6oz) Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Castile Soap
10 drops dōTERRA Lavender
10 drops dōTERRA TerraShield
1 Tablespoon FCO (optional)
*(water + a pump bottle for small dogs & puppies)
Mix all ingredients in a small glass jar (I use a mason jar). Lather a small amount into the dog’s wet coat, let it sit for a minute or so, then rinse clean.
*For small breeds and puppies, add 2 TBSP of the mixed shampoo into an empty pumping soap bottle and fill with water. This will make a foaming wash that is even gentler than the straight recipe.
Our Eleanor is 30lbs with sensitive skin and she does great with the straight recipe.
I hope you enjoy this DIY dog shampoo recipe! If you have any questions at all about it, the ingredients or how to get them, I am always happy to help.
